Burkina Faso on Tuesday reaffirmed support for Morocco territorial sovereignty and endorsed the autonomy proposal as the basis for resolving the Moroccan Sahara issue, following talks in Rabat between the two countries foreign ministers.
The position was stated by Burkina Faso foreign minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traore during a meeting with Moroccan foreign minister Nasser Bourita on the sidelines of the African conference on victims of terrorism held on 2 and 3 December.
Traore welcomed the United Nations Security Council latest resolution on the issue and reiterated Ouagadougou backing for the autonomy plan as the viable political framework advanced by Morocco.
He also recalled Burkina Faso decision to open a consulate general in Dakhla in October 2020, describing it as part of deepening bilateral cooperation.
Bourita thanked Burkina Faso for what he described as consistent support and said the position reflects growing alignment between Rabat and African partners on regional stability and diplomacy.
The meeting took place alongside discussions on Africa security challenges and victim centered counterterrorism policies.
