France is set for disruption across transport education and public services on Tuesday after major unions called a nationwide strike against the government draft 2026 budget.
Unions are demanding an end to pay freezes in the civil service, a general wage rise, a halt to job cuts and the reversal of plans to increase out of pocket medical charges under the health insurance system, according to French media and union statements.
In transport, reduced services are expected on Paris network, where the strike notice runs from Monday through Wednesday. Rail unions warned of delays and cancellations across the national network.
Air travel will also be affected with two pilot unions at Air France planning industrial action on Tuesday and Wednesday to protest job cuts, raising the prospect of flight disruption.
Schools are expected to see staff shortages with some primary and secondary schools running limited services and others closing depending on municipal decisions. Unions accuse the government of cutting more than 4,000 secondary posts and reducing positions in primary education. Catering and extracurricular services could be curtailed.
The strike call also covers state and local government workers, with unions warning of slower administrative services, temporary counter closures and delays in appointments including identity documents. Some health facilities may operate minimum service levels.
