The Court of Appeal in Settat has upheld a lower court’s ruling against the driver involved in the incident known as the “Sidi Rahal child accident,” in which a young girl, Ghita, was run over by a vehicle towing a jet ski on the beach of Sidi Rahal.
The appellate court confirmed the original sentence from Bershid court, imposing a 10-month prison term and a 500-dirham fine for driving a vehicle on sand dunes.
The court also upheld the acquittal of the driver on charges of altering the accident scene but ordered him to pay 400,000 dirhams (approximately 40 million centimes) in compensation to the victim. The insurance company involved was excluded from the case. The defendant has 10 days to appeal the appellate decision under existing legal procedures.
The incident occurred last summer, when the girl was seriously injured and transported to Casablanca for emergency treatment. Authorities opened a preliminary investigation, and the driver was placed under custody pending trial.
