Two-thirds of Morocco’s small businesses now favor digital payments over cash for greater security and efficiency.
A Visa study found that nearly 60 percent of small and medium enterprises have used electronic tools for more than three years, with many reporting higher sales and easier financial management.
The trend is most visible in cities like Casablanca and Marrakesh, where cafés and retailers increasingly display card terminals and QR codes. Yet cash still dominates about 63 percent of commercial transactions nationwide, as 42 percent of businesses operate exclusively in cash.
Merchants cite high banking fees, equipment costs, and fiscal scrutiny as barriers to adoption. Morocco has only 80,000 payment terminals for 2.5 million small firms. Still, 56 percent of merchants say they now trust digital systems more than before, while 71 percent view cash as riskier due to theft or disputes.
With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations expected to draw thousands of visitors, authorities see modernized payments as a key step toward projecting economic efficiency and expanding financial inclusion.
