Three people died Saturday in separate incidents caused by rough seas on Spain’s Tenerife island, local emergency services said.
A man rescued by helicopter after falling into the water at La Guancha beach in the island’s north was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital, authorities said.
Another man was found dead near El Cabezo beach in the south after resuscitation efforts failed.
In Puerto de la Cruz, powerful waves swept ten people off a pier.
Police and bystanders pulled the group to safety, but one woman in cardiac arrest could not be revived. The remaining nine were hospitalized, three of them in serious condition.
The Canary Islands, an Atlantic archipelago off northwest Africa, remained on alert Saturday for coastal wave hazards. Authorities urged residents and tourists to stay away from beaches and follow safety instructions.
