Polisario front adopts softer tone, expresses willingness to negotiate with Morocco

The Polisario Front expressed its “readiness to engage in direct, serious, and good-faith negotiations with the Kingdom of Morocco, without preconditions and under UN auspices, to reach a just, peaceful, and lasting solution” to the Sahara issue, according to a statement from the group.

The announcement came in a letter sent on Monday by Polisario Front leader Brahim Ghali to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, as the UN Security Council prepares to review the mandate of MINURSO.

The Front reaffirmed its openness to negotiations with Morocco to achieve “a solution that guarantees the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and restores regional peace and stability, in line with relevant UN resolutions,” the same source said.

This is not the first time the Polisario has shown willingness to negotiate with Morocco to reach a peaceful, lasting solution, but the new statement reflects a shift in tone, now referring to Morocco as the Kingdom of Morocco, as opposed to aggressive wording.

This coincides with recent developments and discussions at the UN Security Council this month on the Sahara issue, as part of deliberations on renewing the mandate of the MINURSO peacekeeping mission.

Previous reports indicated that the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, called, during a closed-door UN Security Council meeting on October 10, for renewed negotiations between Morocco, the Polisario Front, Algeria, and Mauritania by the end of 2025.

The diplomat emphasized the need for all four parties to engage in dialogue, stressing that “no peace process can succeed without the willingness to move beyond entrenched historical positions.”
