Moroccan air carrier Royal Air Maroc (RAM) and China Eastern Airlines signed, Saturday in Shanghai, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen air connectivity between China and Africa, marking a new milestone in their strategic partnership.
The agreement, signed by RAM CEO Hamid Addou and China Eastern President Wang Zhiqing, aims to expand flights between Morocco and China through a codeshare deal, improve connections beyond both carriers’ hubs, and a Special Prorate Agreement to enhance network complementarity.
Wang said the long-standing friendship between China and Morocco provides a solid foundation for deeper aviation cooperation, citing the natural synergy between Shanghai’s hub and RAM’s extensive African network.
For his part, Addou noted the partnership aligns with Morocco’s broader strategy under King Mohammed VI to expand South-South cooperation and strengthen bilateral ties.
The two airlines also plan to broaden collaboration in other air transport areas, aiming to offer high-quality services and greater operational efficiency. RAM currently operates three weekly direct flights between Casablanca and Beijing, while China Eastern’s subsidiary, Shanghai Airlines, runs a Shanghai–Casablanca service via Marseille, recently adding a direct frequency.
Both carriers said the expanded cooperation will support growing economic, cultural, and tourism exchanges and position Morocco as a key gateway between China and Africa.
China Eastern, based in Shanghai, is one of China’s three largest airlines and operates the country’s most extensive international network, with around 9,100 flights per month.
