An environmental petition launched by the Oxygène Association for Environment and Health is calling for the urgent protection of Maamora Forest, one of Morocco’s most vital ecosystems, from what activists describe as a “slow death caused by relentless urban expansion.”
The petition urges the Director General of the National Agency for Water and Forests to intervene immediately to halt the uprooting of centuries-old cork oak trees and to stop “unsustainable developments and concrete sprawl” threatening the forest and its surrounding green belts.
The document calls for a comprehensive national restoration plan to rehabilitate degraded areas through scientific and participatory methods, positioning Maâmora and nearby forest parks as ecological, economic, and social assets that serve local communities and promote sustainable development.
The petition further recommends the creation of new natural parks to accommodate Morocco’s growing urban population while preserving air and water quality and maintaining ecological balance.
Maamora Forest, often described as “the lungs of Morocco”, is home to one of the country’s most important groundwater reserves, the Maâmora aquifer, a key pillar of national water security.
Environmental advocates warn that ongoing deforestation could threaten its survival at a time when the country faces increasing drought and water scarcity.
