Moroccan authorities have detained a man accused of hacking into electronic countdown screens promoting the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Casablanca, according to Hespress AR sources.

The suspect, identified as Fakhr Eddine B., was presented before the public prosecutor at the Ain Sebaa Court of First Instance, which ordered his detention at Oukacha Prison on Saturday.

Prosecutors charged him with insulting public officials and illegally accessing and disrupting an automated data-processing system, after he allegedly used the hacked display to post offensive messages directed at the national police.

The incident occurred earlier this week at the United Nations Square in downtown Casablanca, where digital billboards counting down to the Africa Cup of Nations, to be hosted by Morocco, were compromised.

The hacking followed days of demonstrations in Morocco’s economic capital by members of the “Generation Z” movement.
