Morocco’s economy showed strong entrepreneurial momentum in the first seven months of 2025, marked by a sharp rise in new business creation, trademarks and patent filings, according to the Moroccan Office of Industrial and Commercial Property.
Between January and July, 65,754 new businesses were registered, including 47,138 companies and 18,616 sole proprietorships, the office said in its latest report.
The Casablanca-Settat region dominated the landscape, accounting for 39% of newly established firms (18,369), followed by Rabat-Salé-Kénitra with 14.2% (6,682) and Marrakesh-Safi with 12.9% (6,098).
In terms of sole proprietorships, Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima ranked first with 3,645 registrations, trailed by the Oriental region with 2,195 (11.8%) and Casablanca-Settat with 2,082 (11.1%).
The dynamism extended beyond company creation to intellectual property. The office recorded 12,462 new trademark applications and 6,494 renewals, with Moroccan-origin brands making up 68% of filings.
Patent activity also surged. A total of 1,732 patent applications were submitted between January and July, including 249 Moroccan filings and 1,483 from abroad. Domestic patent requests grew 43% compared to the same period in 2024, underscoring a rise in local innovation. Authorities granted 357 patents during the seven-month period.
Pharmaceutical products topped the list of patent filings with 30%, followed by fine chemistry at 13%, and both metallurgy and biotechnology at 9% each. Electrical machinery accounted for 5%.
Moroccan universities remained at the forefront of domestic patent filings, contributing 65% of the total, followed by individuals at 18% and businesses at 14%. Research centers had a smaller share.
The report highlighted the growing role of research, innovation and entrepreneurship in boosting the country’s economic competitiveness.
