With less than a month remaining before the early elections in the Netherlands, scheduled for October 29, 2025, Ahmed Aboutaleb, former mayor of Rotterdam of Moroccan origin, has emerged as the preferred candidate for prime minister, according to a recent poll.
The survey of more than 1,200 voters places Aboutaleb in the lead with 13 percent support, ahead of far-right populist Geert Wilders (PVV) at 11 percent, while Henri Bontenbal (CDA) and Frans Timmermans (GroenLinks-PvdA) follow at 7 percent each.
Aboutaleb appeals to highly educated and older voters, whereas Wilders draws his strongest backing from those with vocational or technical training.
Born in 1961 in Beni Sidel, Morocco, Aboutaleb immigrated to the Netherlands at 15 and later became the first Muslim and Moroccan-origin mayor of a major Dutch city.
