Only months after women astronauts worldwide expanded their footprint in space exploration, Moroccan neurosurgeon Joudia Touri is vying for her own place beyond Earth as a contestant in the international SERA competition, a program that could lead to a spaceflight.
For Touri, whose work focuses on the brain and nervous system, the project is less about spectacle than about probing how cosmic travel alters human physiology, an area she believes could unlock insights into neuroscience and medicine.
Her campaign, still in its early stages, leans heavily on social media visibility, with voting now open on X and soon on Instagram and TikTok.
Touri has already drawn strong encouragement from Moroccans online, though she acknowledges she must broaden her reach to advance to the next stage.
Beyond the personal challenge, she frames her candidacy as a message about Moroccan women’s ability to excel in demanding fields, hoping to inspire future generations to pursue science and technology on equal terms.
