Morocco coach Regragui eyes strong finish after World Cup qualification

Morocco coach Walid Regragui said Sunday he is determined for his squad to finish World Cup qualifying strongly, despite already securing a spot in the 2026 tournament.

Speaking ahead of Monday’s match against Zambia, Regragui stressed that every game matters for the Atlas Lions. “When we play for Morocco, we always have to look for victory,” he told reporters. “The fans expect a lot from us, and we are here to make them happy.”

Regragui described Zambia as a tough opponent, especially at home, and said the game would be a big test. He noted that Morocco’s early qualification does not mean the job is done. “We want to finish the qualifiers with maximum points,” he said.

The coach hinted at significant squad rotation due to travel and fatigue, adding that as many as 80% of the starting lineup could change. Players such as Achraf Hakimi may be rested, but Regragui expressed confidence in the substitutes.

Rejecting the notion that Morocco relies only on defense, Regragui highlighted the team’s firepower. “We have the best attack in the qualifiers, with more than 40 goals in 12 matches,” he said. “We know when to defend and when to use our offensive strength.”

Morocco sealed its seventh World Cup appearance after a 5-0 victory over Niger on Saturday in Rabat, topping Group E with 18 points.
