Benabdellah backs Interior Ministry oversight for 2026 elections

Mohamed Nabil Benabdellah, secretary-general of the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS), said Monday that his party supports the Interior Ministry’ oversight of Morocco’s 2026 elections, while firmly calling for corrupt figures to be banned from running.

While presenting his party’s memorandum on electoral reform, Benabdellah said elections are not just a technical process but “a decisive political and constitutional moment” that should mark a turning point in the country’s democratic path.

Benabdellah said that the Interior Ministry is the only body with the logistical capacity to organize a nationwide vote, but insisted the process should not be left to the state alone.

Political parties, Benabdellah said, must also be directly involved through their leaders at both national and regional levels to guarantee credibility.

Benabdellah warned against repeating what happened in 2021, when, according to him, a number of corrupt individuals entered the political arena.

Benabdellah said that anyone under judicial investigation or suspected of corruption should be kept away from the ballot. He framed this as essential to protect the integrity of the system and to rebuild trust between citizens and politics.

The PPS leader urged parties to shoulder their own share of responsibility by carefully choosing competent and honest candidates.

Benabdellah also called for the adoption of a new political pact among parties, similar to earlier experiences, that would bind them to shared principles such as fighting corruption, ensuring transparency, and encouraging citizens to participate.

Benabdellah welcomed what he described as “positive assurances” from his recent meeting with the Interior Minister, who promised that the 2026 elections would be fair, transparent, and reflective of the people’s free will.

Still, Benabdellah insisted neutrality from the administration must be guaranteed if citizens are to have confidence in the process.

The PPS memorandum also demanded tougher sanctions against anyone found guilty of violating electoral rules, alongside broader reforms to expand participation.

Among its priorities: equal opportunities for women, greater involvement of young people, and voting rights for Moroccans living abroad.

For Benabdellah, the 2026 vote is not just about choosing a parliament but about strengthening Morocco’s institutions, producing a credible government, and laying the foundation for a deeper democratic renewal.

I find the issue of granting women equal rights as men in various electoral fields is pure hypocrisy.if women are really eager to enjoy this status, all they have to do is to stop voting for men .the female vote should go 100% for female candidates and that way the baren debate and the headache are over.women be smart
