Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Thursday dismissed Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui, less than a year after appointing him, and named Industry Minister Seifi Ghrib as interim prime minister, the presidency said in a brief statement.
Larbaoui, a former chief of staff to Tebboune, had been serving as prime minister since November 2023. He was the fourth person to hold the post under Tebboune, following Aymen Benabderrahmane, Abdelaziz Djerad and Sabri Boukadoum.
Boukadoum briefly led a caretaker government in December 2019 after Tebboune’s election, succeeding then–prime minister Noureddine Bedoui.
Since Tebboune took office, Algeria has undergone repeated government reshuffles. Djerad’s government was partially reshaped in April 2020, Benabderrahmane’s cabinet was altered in November 2021, and Larbaoui’s government saw seven ministers dismissed last November.
In the same reshuffle, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Saïd Chengriha was also named deputy defense minister while retaining his military post.
Analysts say the frequent cabinet changes reflect instability in Algeria’s executive branch, which they view as having limited influence on policymaking. Real power, they argue, remains concentrated in the presidency and is heavily shaped by the military, which plays a central role in maintaining the country’s political and party balance.
