The Court of First Instance in Fquih Ben Salah issued Monday the first ruling under Morocco’s new law on alternative sentencing, Law 43.22, by replacing a one-year prison term for theft with 1,095 hours of community service.
Legal observers described the decision as a precedent that marks the start of implementing alternative penalties, reflecting efforts to modernize criminal justice with more flexible, socially conscious measures.
The ruling comes as part of wider reforms aimed at reducing prison overcrowding and aligning with royal directives to promote sanctions that balance deterrence, community protection, and individual dignity.
