PJD denounces high visa costs and refusals for Moroccan citizens

Morocco’s Justice and Development Party (PJD) has raised concerns over the growing number of visa refusals faced by Moroccan citizens and the high costs associated with applications.

In a written question to Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, MP Mustapha Ibrahimi denounced what he called a “financial burden” weighing on travelers, particularly those seeking to visit Europe or the United States for work, study or medical treatment.

According to Ibrahimi, Schengen visa application fees alone amounted to nearly 1 billion dirhams in 2024, with a refusal rate of around 20 percent.

He said the losses linked to rejected applications with the European Union reached an estimated 200 million dirhams.

The PJD also criticized the lack of transparency in consular decisions and the role of private intermediaries accused of imposing exorbitant fees.

The party urged the government to negotiate reforms, introduce reimbursement mechanisms for rejected requests and require consulates to justify refusals when conditions are met.
