Morocco has become the second-largest importer of Canadian durum wheat, purchasing 1.14 million tons in the first 11 months of the 2024–2025 agricultural season, according to data from Statistics Canada.
The prolonged drought affecting Morocco for the past seven years has sharply reduced domestic wheat production, forcing the country to increase reliance on foreign suppliers.
While France has traditionally been Morocco’s main source of durum wheat, persistent weather disruptions in the French market have prompted Rabat to diversify its imports.
Canada has emerged as a key supplier, benefiting from stable production and export capacity, while other countries have also been considered to ensure supply security.
