The average debt-to-income ratio among Moroccan individuals declined to 34 percent in 2024 from 35 percent the previous year, according to the 12th annual Financial Stability Report jointly issued by Bank Al-Maghrib, ACAPS, and the AMMC.
The findings are based on an analysis of nearly 440,000 loan files collected from lenders throughout the year.
The share of salaried borrowers dropped from 42 percent in 2023 to 33 percent in 2024, while public-sector workers increased from 24 to 28 percent, remaining the most indebted group with an average ratio of 62 percent.
Borrowers earning over 10,000 dirhams a month accounted for 60 percent of total loan volumes but had the lowest debt ratio at 31 percent.
By age, those between 50 and 60 years old recorded the highest debt levels, at 39 percent. Meanwhile, 32 percent of borrowers exceeded a 40 percent debt load, with civil servants and private employees comprising 68 percent of this group.
