Bank Al-Maghrib reported a 4.7 percent decline in cheque payment incidents in 2024, with 487,613 cases recorded by the Central Cheque Payment Incident Registry.

The total value of these incidents fell to 16.1 billion dirhams, down 4 percent from the previous year.

According to the central bank’s 2024 annual report, the number of settlements surged by 50.4 percent to 192,346, amounting to 5.4 billion dirhams, nearly double the previous year’s figure. This rise was largely attributed to a temporary amnesty measure granted to issuers of bad cheques.

Meanwhile, unpaid standardized bills of exchange increased by 5.5 percent, reaching 617,967 cases. Regularizations of these instruments saw only a slight uptick, with 27,432 cases reported versus 27,149 in 2023.

The credit registry recorded a 1 percent rise in active loan contracts to 5.8 million, with 66 percent issued by banks, 17 percent by microcredit associations, 16 percent by financing companies, and 1 percent by participatory banks. The total number of borrowers remained stable at 3.2 million, 95 percent of whom are individuals.

The Irregular Cheques Service flagged irregularities in over 17.6 million bank account numbers (RIBs), most commonly from closed accounts (15.6 million), court- or bank-blocked accounts (2.1 million), or unavailable funds (485,000 accounts). More than 3.2 million cheques were also reported as blocked.

User consultations through the Irregular Cheques platform revealed that 6.4 percent of cheques reviewed were linked to irregular accounts.
