Morocco is monitoring water quality at a record 203 beaches in 2025, up from 196 the previous year, as part of efforts to align with international environmental standards and boost coastal tourism, energy transition minister Leila Benali announced in a parliamentary response.
The program, governed by Law 81-12 on coastal management, mandates periodic water testing and classification of beaches based on compliance. Launched in 1993 with only 18 monitored beaches, it now spans 497 water sampling stations across nine coastal regions, and evaluates sand quality at 63 beaches. Tests assess fungi and marine debris, while public bulletins update swimmers on water safety.
The ministry has also introduced digital tools like the “IPlages” app and a dedicated web portal to enhance public access to environmental data. A national beach commission, chaired by the interior ministry and involving multiple stakeholders, oversees governance. The initiative forms part of broader marine protection efforts under the Barcelona Convention and national coastal planning reforms.
