A Moroccan undocumented migrant was shot in the shoulder by Bulgarian border police near the village of Zvezdets, close to the Turkish border, after allegedly attempting to enter Bulgaria illegally, according to a statement from Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry on Thursday.
Authorities said the migrant was part of a group of around 20 North African nationals intercepted while trying to cross into the Schengen Area. The Moroccan man reportedly refused police orders and continued fleeing, prompting officers to fire warning shots before shooting him. He was later transferred to Burgas hospital for treatment.
The Bulgaria-Turkey route is one of the main corridors for migrants seeking entry into Western Europe, often exposing them to violence from border forces and exploitation by smuggling networks.
Human rights groups have repeatedly condemned Bulgaria’s treatment of migrants, citing beatings, dog attacks, and even firearm use by border officers, and have called on the EU to investigate alleged violations.
