Raw sewage discharge at Tangier beach sparks outrage, officials blame plumbing error

Visitors and residents of Tangier were shocked this week after black wastewater was seen flowing directly into the city’s main municipal beach, Playa, raising public concerns about pollution and environmental negligence.

Videos widely circulated on social media showed dark sewage mixing with the normally clear seawater, reportedly discharged from restaurants and cafes operating at the city’s marina.

The footage has prompted outrage from beachgoers and environmental advocates, many of whom voiced frustration over what they describe as reckless disregard for marine cleanliness in one of Tangier’s most visited coastal areas.

In response to the public uproar, Hespress AR reached out to a local official familiar with the matter, who confirmed that authorities had opened an investigation and dispatched a committee of representatives from relevant agencies to inspect the site.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to the press, said the pollution was linked to a repair error at a commercial establishment inside the marina.

According to the official, during maintenance on the venue’s sewage system, waste was mistakenly funneled into a stormwater drainage pipe, causing it to flow directly into the sea. “It was a mix-up during a repair operation,” the official said, adding that the incident was not a result of ongoing illegal dumping.

Laboratory tests carried out after the incident found no evidence of toxic substances or health threats in the water, according to the same source. Authorities have since pledged to monitor the situation closely and ensure no long-term risks to public health or marine life remain.

Despite the reassurances, the incident has reignited broader questions around environmental oversight and the enforcement of sanitation regulations in Morocco’s rapidly developing coastal cities.
