Moroccan cities battle summer surge in cockroach infestations, civil society urges action

With the arrival of summer and rising temperatures, several Moroccan cities are grappling with a surge in insect infestations, particularly cockroaches, prompting calls from civil society actors for local governments to step up their efforts to safeguard public health.

Civil activist Youssef Tidarini blamed municipal public health services for what he called a “worsening invasion of pests,” stressing the need for stronger preventive measures to limit the spread of insects in urban areas.

“This situation demands effective and proactive measures, especially as the unchecked spread of insects poses a real health threat if they come into contact with food,” Tidarini told local media.

He pointed out that the current summer, marked by unusually high temperatures, raises serious questions about the effectiveness of the preventive campaigns undertaken by local authorities.

However, Tidarini emphasized that the responsibility is shared with the public, calling on citizens to avoid dumping trash indiscriminately in public spaces, a practice that contributes to the problem.

Fellow civil actor Mehdi Lemina echoed the concerns, highlighting that public littering presents a significant challenge to authorities trying to curb the proliferation of cockroaches and other pests during the hot season.

“Municipalities must intervene using all resources available, particularly in densely populated neighborhoods,” Lemina said. He added that authorities should also ensure citizen complaints about insect infestations reach the relevant departments tasked with pest control.

He cited Casablanca as an example of a city that provides a “green number” hotline for residents to report pest-related issues.

Lemina also warned that certain household practices can inadvertently exacerbate the problem. “People often keep flower pots and plants indoors without realizing they can attract insects, especially in summer. It’s important to use the right pest control treatments,” he said.

Both activists emphasized the need for a coordinated approach involving both the government and the public, urging increased vigilance and cooperation from civil society to confront what they describe as a growing public health concern.
