Najat Mokhtar Aguenaou has become the Arab Woman of the year, after being recognized in London for her notable scientific career and unwavering commitment to empowering women in every part of the world.
The award ceremony, held at the prestigious Carlton Tower Jumeirah Hotel, brought together royals, diplomats, and leaders from across the Arab And International spheres to celebrate the achievements of women who are working hard to reshape their fields.
A day before the award ceremony, the Arab Women’s Summit 2025 took place at Lancaster House, gathering policymakers and changemakers to address the challenges facing Arab women. Dr. Mokhtar-Aguenaou stood out not only as a guest of honor but also as a symbol of the summit’s message: women’s potential must be recognized, supported, and celebrated.
Dr.Mokhtar Aguenau started her impressive career after moving from her hometown, Taounate, to Rabat to study at Mohammed V University. She went on to earn a PhD in food science from the University of Dijon in France and another doctorate in nutrition and endocrinology from Laval University in Canada.
Her training culminated in a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University (USA), supported by a Fulbright scholarship, an academic path that reflects her determination and global vision.
In 2001, she joined the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), where she steadily rose through the ranks. Since 2019, she has served as Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, the first woman ever to hold this position. In this role, she leads initiatives that apply nuclear technology to global challenges such as food security, health, and climate change.
Najat Mokhtar sets the perfect example of female leadership in a traditionally male-dominated field. Her rise to the highest scientific levels within the UN system serves as a powerful message to young Arab women that excellence in science and academia is within their reach.
Through her achievements, she has become a role model and a passionate advocate for gender equality, constantly working to open doors for others.
