Morocco and the United States have signed a new agreement to enhance cargo security and intelligence-sharing at Morocco’s busiest ports, Casablanca and Tanger Med, reinforcing efforts to safeguard global supply chains and promote trade between the two countries.
The agreement, part of the U.S. Container Security Initiative (CSI), was signed Tuesday in Rabat by Abdellatif Amrani, Director General of Morocco’s Customs and Excise Administration, and Donald Conroy of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), according to a CBP press release.
The CSI program, launched in 2002, targets high-risk maritime cargo by screening containers at foreign ports before they reach U.S. shores. The addition of Casablanca and Tanger Med — the latter being Africa’s largest port — underscores the strategic importance of Morocco in transatlantic logistics.
“This marks not just the expansion of the CSI program, but the strengthening of a partnership rooted in trust,” Conroy said at the signing ceremony.
The new agreement builds on a 2013 customs cooperation deal and reflects a growing emphasis on using advanced technology and joint intelligence operations to prevent security threats without disrupting the flow of commerce.
“With this accession, we reaffirm our commitment to harmonizing security with the seamless flow of trade,” Amrani said. “This consolidates Tanger Med’s standing as a secure, world-class maritime hub.”
The CSI currently operates in over 60 ports around the world. It is designed to identify, target, and inspect containers that pose a potential security risk before they enter the United States. By extending CSI operations to Morocco, both countries aim to further streamline trade while tightening security standards in the Mediterranean shipping corridor.
