Morocco is preparing to import approximately 30,000 head of cattle for slaughter by the end of July in an effort to stabilize domestic red meat prices, according to industry sources in the meat import and distribution sector.
Sources told Hespress AR that the pace of imports is expected to increase significantly following the Eid al-Adha holiday. The upcoming week is expected to be critical in finalizing shipments. Around 20,000 head of cattle will be imported from Brazil, with an additional 10,000 from neighboring Spain.
Demand for red meat is forecast to rise in the coming weeks, driven by the return of Moroccan expatriates and a seasonal uptick in weddings and celebrations.
Retail prices for red meat are expected to start at 100 dirhams ($10) per kilogram for locally sourced and Spanish beef, while Brazilian beef will sell for between 80 and 90 dirhams per kilogram, according to the same sources. Wholesale prices are projected to range between 80 and 90 dirhams for local and Spanish meat, and between 70 and 78 dirhams for Brazilian imports.
The planned imports aim to ease pressure on domestic supply and help moderate prices amid heightened seasonal consumption.
