Morocco’s telecom landscape is undergoing a clear transition as traditional mobile voice and SMS services continue to decline, while mobile internet remains the dominant force in user behavior, according to the latest quarterly report from the national telecom regulator ANRT.
In the first three months of 2025, Moroccans logged 10.4 billion minutes in mobile voice calls — an 11.68 percent year-on-year drop. Prepaid users averaged just 27 minutes of calls per month, compared to 275 minutes for postpaid subscribers. ANRT attributes the decline to the growing use of internet-based calling apps.
Text messaging has also taken a hit, with SMS volumes falling 17.6 percent to 374 million messages over the quarter. By contrast, fixed-line calling surged nearly 50 percent to 448 million outgoing minutes.
Internet usage remains the bright spot. Total internet subscriptions reached 39.86 million by the end of March, up by over one million year-on-year. Mobile connections accounted for 92.88 percent of these, with ADSL and other forms making up the rest.
