The 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, opened on Monday in Nice, bringing together over 50 heads of state and government and more than 1,500 delegates from nearly 200 countries.
The opening session featured speeches by the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves Robles.
Held under the theme “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean,” UNOC3, which runs until Friday, will delve into several ocean-related issues, ranging from sustainable fishing and marine pollution to interactions between climate and biodiversity.
Following previous editions in New York in 2017 and Lisbon in 2022, this edition is poised to be “a major milestone” in the international agenda for ocean governance, which faces numerous challenges, particularly those related to climate change, rising sea levels, marine pollution, overfishing, and illegal fishing.
