Regragui: Moroccan national football team has a decisive bench

Morocco’s national football team now boasts a game-changing bench that offers tactical flexibility, head coach Walid Regragui said Friday following a 2-0 friendly win against Tunisia.

“We now have a bench that makes a difference and gives us real options,” Regragui told reporters during a post-match news conference, praising the depth and balance of his squad.

The coach acknowledged the tough nature of the match, noting Tunisia’s experience and the physical toll of a long season on several players. “It was a good challenge against a seasoned and tough Tunisian side. There were a lot of absences at the end of the season, which was intense for many players physically,” he said.

“June games are always tricky,” Regragui added. “The key isn’t always being at your peak, but knowing how to win matches.”

Regragui said he used the match to test new options, including a reshuffled defense and a fresh attacking setup featuring Saibari and Bensghir on the wings. “We fielded younger players and tried a new offensive formula to see how it works,” he said. “In the first half, we lacked depth and space, but still created chances. In the second half, we came in with a different mindset and pressed more. In the end, the better team won.”

Friday’s victory marked Morocco’s 11th straight win, a streak Regragui hopes to extend Monday when the Atlas Lions face Benin in another friendly at the Fès Sports Complex. “We’re aiming to break a record and continue our momentum,” he said.

The two matches are part of a broader preparation program designed to strengthen team chemistry and give players additional minutes ahead of upcoming competitive fixtures.
