Ghana backs Morocco's Sahara autonomy plan, calls it “only viable solution"

Ghana has formally aligned with Morocco’s position on the  Sahara, declaring Rabat’s 2007 autonomy plan “the only realistic and lasting basis” for a mutually acceptable resolution to the decades-old territorial dispute.

The endorsement came in a joint statement following a high-level meeting in Rabat between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Ghanaian counterpart, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

This move cements a policy shift that began earlier this year when Ghana suspended diplomatic relations with the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).

The decision, made under former President Nana Akufo-Addo and sustained under newly inaugurated President John Dramani Mahama, was officially communicated to the African Union and the United Nations in January.

Ghana’s pivot reflects a wider trend among African nations reassessing their positions on the Sahara conflict.

Since 2000, 46 countries , including 13 in Africa, have cut or frozen ties with the SADR, and made a pragmatic embrace of Morocco’s UN-backed autonomy plan.

Ablakwa also voiced support for Morocco’s Atlantic Sahel Corridor initiative, aimed at improving access for landlocked African nations.

The two ministers further lauded the Atlantic African States Process as a framework for regional cooperation in security, energy, logistics, and development.

Ghana’s latest stance is likely to bolster Morocco’s international campaign for recognition of its sovereignty over the disputed territory,  a cornerstone of Rabat’s diplomatic agenda ahead of major multilateral events, including the 2030 World Cup.
