South Korea’s election authorities officially declared center-left candidate Lee Jae-myung the country’s new president, after he won snap elections triggered by the former leader’s impeachment over an abortive attempt at martial law.

“The presidential term begins the moment the winner is confirmed, so I will now confirm the time. The current time is 6:21 am (2121 GMT). The National Election Commission hereby declares Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party as the elected president,” National Election Commission chairperson Roh Tae-ak said.
