Morocco’s House of Representatives on Monday passed a bill aimed at aligning national certification standards with international decarbonization efforts, in a move to enhance the global competitiveness of Moroccan industries.
The bill, which amends Law No. 12.06 on standardization, certification, and accreditation, was approved by a majority with 105 votes in favor and 45 against. No abstentions were recorded.
Secretary of State for Foreign Trade Omar Hejira said the legislation supports Morocco’s commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to global climate policy, particularly as key trade partners such as the European Union move toward carbon border adjustment mechanisms.
Hejira noted that carbon content in goods is increasingly viewed as both an environmental issue and a technical trade barrier. Under the new law, the Moroccan Institute for Standardization will be authorized to certify carbon declarations in coordination with the authority overseeing sustainable development.
