Ecuador to open embassy in Rabat after withdrawing recognition of Polisario

Ecuador has announced plans to open its first-ever embassy in Morocco, marking a historic milestone in bilateral relations and a clear shift in the Latin American nation’s stance on the Sahara issue.

Ecuador’s Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld made the announcement during a working session in Quito with her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, after Ecuador’s decision in October 2024 to suspend its recognition of RASD, which it had originally acknowledged in 1983 and allowed to open a representation in Quito in 2009.

“This is a historic moment in our bilateral relations,” said Bourita, adding that since President Daniel Noboa’s decision to cut ties with the Polisario, Morocco and Ecuador have launched a roadmap to deepen South-South cooperation.

The roadmap spans economic, agricultural, and educational areas, including scholarship programs and institutional partnerships.

Bourita is currently visiting Ecuador as the official representative of King Mohammed VI at the presidential inauguration of Noboa, who defeated left-wing candidate Luisa Gonzalez in the 2023 elections.

The Moroccan minister was joined by Farida Loudaya, Morocco’s ambassador to Colombia and Ecuador.

Ecuador’s withdrawal of recognition of the RASD is part of a broader shift aligned with the momentum driven by King Mohammed VI to secure support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and promote the Autonomy Plan as the only viable solution to the regional dispute.

The upcoming embassy in Rabat will be Ecuador’s first diplomatic representation in the Maghreb and signals a commitment to closer political and economic alignment with Morocco.

Sommerfeld described it as a strategic decision that opens a new chapter in relations between the two nations, geographically distant but increasingly united in vision.
