Report: Tourism becomes Morocco’s leading economic sector in 2025

Tourism has emerged as Morocco’s leading economic driver in 2025, thanks to a combination of outstanding national performance, proactive government policies, and a clear strategic vision, according to French media outlet La Quotidienne .

The publication notes that tourism has now surpassed traditional economic pillars such as agriculture and industry. This remarkable transformation, it points out, is the result of targeted investments and a well-executed national strategy.

In 2024, Morocco welcomed 17.4 million tourists—a 20% increase over 2023—achieving its goal two years ahead of schedule. From January to April 2025 alone, the country recorded 5.7 million tourist arrivals, representing a 23% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

La Quotidienne highlights Morocco’s ambitious roadmap to rank among the world’s top 15 tourist destinations. The strategy includes opening new air routes, developing emerging destinations, and upgrading hotel infrastructure.

In addition to enhancing its core offerings, Morocco has diversified its appeal by spotlighting lesser-known regions and promoting cultural, ecological, and seaside tourism, the article notes.

The upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the co-hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal are also accelerating infrastructure development and further boosting the country’s international appeal.

Tourism now accounts for approximately 7% of Morocco’s GDP and has become a major source of employment and foreign currency, the article states.

With a target of attracting 26 million tourists by 2030, La Quotidienne concludes, “Morocco continues to strengthen its position on the global tourism stage.”
