Authorities in Tangier have broken up a clandestine abortion network involving both private security guards and public hospital staff, raising broader concerns about public sector integrity and the misuse of medical resources.
According to a report in Al-Akhbar newspaper, the operation was dismantled last weekend following a series of investigations by the judicial police. The probe was triggered by intelligence suggesting a secret abortion ring exploiting socially vulnerable women in exchange for money.
The network allegedly operated under a coordinated system: a nurse performed the medical procedures, while private security guards ensured discreet entry to the facilities. Medical assistants were tasked with handling logistics, supplies, and setting up hidden spaces where the abortions took place.
Authorities believe the group may have misused public hospital equipment and illegally accessed patient health data, further deepening the gravity of the case. In response, the Ministry of Health has launched an internal investigation to run parallel with the ongoing judicial probe.
Al-Akhbar reported that the nurse, a central figure in the network, was arrested at Ibn Battuta Airport in Tangier as she attempted to leave the country. All individuals detained remain in custody as investigators work to uncover any additional accomplices, both within Tangier and possibly in other regions.
A special report has also been commissioned to coordinate tighter oversight with the regional health delegation, in a bid to prevent similar abuses from recurring in the city’s public healthcare system.
