As summer nears, many residents in Tangier express their deep concerns over the heavy pollution of its beaches and seawater.
Speaking to Hespress, Abderrahim, a local in his late 30th, recalled a time when he and his childhood friends spent entire summers at the beach, playing and swimming in waters that were once pristine.
“Now, we have to travel far just to find a decent beach. It’s nothing like it used to be.” He stated, “Pollution has ruined everything. We can’t even swim at Malabata Beach anymore, it used to be a favorite for my generation and the ones before us.”
Ahmed Tahiri, a biodiversity researcher and executive board member of the Observatory for the Protection of the Environment and Historical Heritage in Tangier, confirmed that the city’s beaches are suffering from severe pollution.
“The condition of some beaches in Tangier is catastrophic,” Tahiri told Hespress. “It will take years of restoration to recover their environmental value.”
He highlighted that certain beaches near Tangier face “constant pollution,” particularly those where wastewater from rivers like Oued Moghogha is discharged directly into the sea.
He warned that the situation is not only persistent but worsening, with no real measures taken to curb pollution or rehabilitate the coastline.
