A growing dispute over foreign travel delegations is causing tension within the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services, amid accusations that certain individuals are repeatedly selected to attend international events on behalf of the chamber.
Professional sources told Hespress AR that internal disagreements have emerged ahead of the chamber’s planned participation in a trade exhibition in a Scandinavian country later this month. The dispute centers on the selection process for delegates representing the region.
The issue has sparked debate among members, who represent a wide range of economic sectors and provinces, with varying levels of influence and representation.
Chamber President Abdelatif Afailal denied any knowledge of disputes, telling Hespress that delegate selection is based on interest and expertise, with priority given to a rotation system. “We typically select four or five people for each international event, and we make sure not to choose the same individual repeatedly,” Afailal said.
He confirmed that five members had been selected to attend the upcoming event in Denmark—two from the chamber’s executive bureau and three from outside it.
Afailal added that one member who had requested to join the delegation had previously attended a trade event in Turkey this February and was therefore not included this time. “This shows our commitment to ensuring fair opportunities for all,” he said.
He also noted that, contrary to public perception, participation in foreign missions is not always coveted. “In many instances, no one volunteers to represent the chamber abroad,” he said. The reason, according to Afailal, is modest compensation: “Representatives receive 1,500 dirhams per day to cover all expenses, which is often insufficient to cover even hotel costs.”
Responding to the rumors of internal political conflict, Afailal insisted that the chamber remains apolitical under his leadership. He suggested that recent speculation may be driven by a member affiliated with the Justice and Development Party (PJD), who did not express interest in attending the Denmark event. “We don’t know what he’s really after,” he added.
