A local official in the rural commune of Oued Malha, Chefchaouen province, has been arrested following a formal complaint by an American woman accusing him of sexual harassment and attempted rape, local media reported.
The incident, which occurred late last week, has sparked public outrage in the region.
According to local media, the woman, temporarily residing in a local household, had asked the accused for help arranging transportation.
The situation allegedly escalated when the official reportedly harassed her and attempted to sexually assault her.
Gendarmerie forces moved quickly to arrest the man, who was referred to the public prosecutor at the Tetouan Court of Appeals.
He has since been placed in pretrial detention as investigations continue to uncover the full circumstances of the case.
