The 21st edition of African Lion, one of the largest military exercises on the African continent, officially launched Monday at the Southern Zone General Staff headquarters in Agadir, highlighting the deepening defense cooperation between Morocco and the United States.
Organized jointly by the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces and the U.S. Army, this year’s edition brings together more than 30 military forces from across the globe, with a focus on enhancing operational readiness, joint planning, and multinational cooperation in response to emerging security threats.
Military officials outlined a comprehensive training agenda, including live-fire exercises supported by HIMARS rocket launchers aimed at neutralizing fortified positions and extremist targets. Other components include special forces operations, nuclear, biological, and chemical response drills, cyber defense simulations, and coordinated air and naval maneuvers.
Lieutenant General Mohamed Ben Al Wali, Chief of Staff of Morocco’s Southern Zone, emphasized the scale and preparation behind the event. A total of 381 trainees completed extensive pre-exercise training designed to ensure full engagement and effectiveness across all planned operations.
“This exercise represents a milestone in our enduring partnership and a reflection of the deep spirit of cooperation between the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces and the U.S. Armed Forces,” Ben Al Wali said. “It has enabled the development of advanced competencies across a wide range of defense activities.”
In addition to battlefield simulations, participants were trained to safeguard critical infrastructure and digital networks from cyberattacks, which are increasingly seen as major threats to modern military operations.
Representing the U.S. military, Major General Bryan Kuckerman, Deputy Commander of the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force–Africa (SETAF-AF), praised Morocco’s pivotal role in promoting regional peace and stability.
“This collaboration reflects Morocco’s unwavering commitment to security and its leadership in fostering military cooperation throughout the continent,” Kuckerman said.
Both sides hailed African Lion 2025 as a powerful symbol of unity and preparedness in a world facing rising geopolitical tensions. Officials said the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces’ organizational capabilities have significantly elevated the quality and scope of the annual drills.
The exercise, which will continue over several weeks, reinforces a shared commitment to peace, deterrence, and coordinated defense strategy among allied nations facing increasingly complex global threats.
