The Moroccan U-20 national team is poised for a critical showdown against Sierra Leone in the quarter-finals of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, currently underway in Egypt. The game is scheduled for next Monday, with kick-off at 4 PM.

The stakes are high, as the winner will not only advance in the African championship but also secure a coveted spot in the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup. This prestigious global youth tournament is set to be held in Chile from September 27 to October 19, 2025.

Morocco advanced to the quarter-finals by securing victories over Kenya (3-2) and Tunisia (3-1), and earning a 0-0 draw against Nigeria.

While these results ensured their progression, their overall performance thus far has reportedly not fully met the high expectations surrounding the team. Their quarter-final opponents, Sierra Leone, have also emerged as a strong contender, impressively defeating host nation Egypt 4-1 in the group stages, a performance that, along with others, has reportedly captured the attention of several international clubs scouting their talented players.

The other quarter-final fixtures in the U-20 AFCON will see Nigeria take on Senegal, host nation Egypt face Ghana, and South Africa play against DR Congo.

Moroccan Football Enjoys Broad Success Across Age Groups

This U-20 campaign is part of a wider, encouraging picture for Moroccan football across various levels.

The Moroccan U-17 men’s team recently achieved a significant milestone, winning the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Morocco last month. This victory also booked their ticket to the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar from November 3-27, 2025.

Morocco is also set to host the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup from October 17 to November 8, 2025. This means the Moroccan U-17 women’s team will compete in this prestigious tournament on home soil.

Furthermore, the senior national team, the Atlas Lions, are also making solid progress in their qualification journey for the next FIFA World Cup, building on their historic 2022 performance.

Talent Development and Ongoing Debates

Much of this success across different age groups is credited to the strategic work of the Moroccan Royal Football Federation (FRMF). Key efforts include actively scouting and integrating talent, particularly from the Moroccan diaspora in Europe, who bring valuable experience.

The Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé is also widely recognized as a vital institution for training young players within Morocco, consistently producing talent for national teams.

However, alongside these achievements, there have been discussions about talent identification. Some observers have pointed out a need for more comprehensive programs to find and support talent in smaller cities and rural areas across Morocco, where promising players might be overlooked. There’s also acknowledgement that a significant portion of players in successful national squads have been developed in European academies.

In a move to address these aspects and further enhance domestic talent development, the FRMF and the Cherifian Phosphates Office (OCP) Group, and private partners, signed, last summer, an agreement to establish the National Football Training Fund. This fund aims to professionalize training centers across Morocco, fostering young football talent nationwide.
