Morocco has strengthened its position in the European textile and clothing market, climbing to the eighth spot among the EU’s top suppliers thanks to a notable increase in exports to key countries, according to newly released data from the Moroccan Association of Textile and Apparel Industries (AMITH).

As of the end of February 2025, total EU imports of Moroccan textiles and clothing reached €4.26 million, up from €3.96 million in the same period last year — a year-on-year growth of 8 percent. The rise comes amid a steady export boost to Spain (+17%) and Portugal (+3%), while exports to Germany surged by 16% between 2024 and 2025.

Spain remained Morocco’s largest European market, importing more than €243 million worth of textile products, a significant increase from €207 million the previous year. Germany followed with €30 million, up from €25 million in February 2024.

In contrast, exports to some traditionally strong markets declined. France imported €96.3 million in Moroccan textiles, down from over €100 million the year before — a 4% drop. Similarly, exports to Italy slipped to €20 million from €21.1 million, and shipments to the Benelux countries (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg) fell sharply by 26%, from €17.9 million to €13.2 million.

Despite improving its EU rank — from 10th in 2023 to 9th in 2024 and now 8th — Morocco still trails China, Bangladesh, Turkey, India, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Pakistan in overall textile and garment exports to the European bloc.

Leading Products in Moroccan Textile Exports

A breakdown of product types shows that trousers continue to dominate Moroccan textile exports, generating MAD 330 million in revenue by the end of January 2025. T-shirts followed with MAD 247 million, while pullovers and woven shirts (chemises) brought in MAD 44 million and MAD 77 million, respectively.

According to official data from Morocco’s Office des Changes, the country’s global textile and clothing exports totaled MAD 3.47 billion in January 2025 — a slight 1% decrease from MAD 3.52 billion in the same period in 2024.

The mixed performance reflects both shifting market dynamics and Morocco’s evolving export strategy. While traditional markets like France and Italy show signs of saturation or slowdown, growth in Northern and Southern Europe — particularly Germany, Spain, and Portugal — indicates new opportunities for Moroccan producers aiming to diversify destinations and maintain competitiveness in a global textile landscape under pressure from Asian manufacturing giants.
