Unstable weather expected across Morocco amid incoming low-pressure system

Morocco is set to experience unstable weather conditions in the coming days due to a low-pressure system centered in the eastern part of the country, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology.

Houcine Youaabed, the agency’s communications official, told Hespress AR that the system will trigger warm, moisture-laden southeastern winds, likely leading to the development of unstable clouds, especially over the High and Middle Atlas regions, the southeast, and eastern Morocco.

On Wednesday, scattered rain showers are forecast across eastern parts of the Saharan provinces, the southeast, the eastern region, the Atlas Mountains, the Rif, the Mediterranean basin, and northwestern areas.

Southeastern regions and parts of eastern Morocco will also be hit by dust storms, with strong to locally strong wind gusts expected in the eastern region, High Atlas, southeastern areas, and southern coastlines.

Daytime temperatures will range from 16°C to 22°C in the Atlas Mountains, Rif, and northwest; 28°C to 32°C in the far southeast and south; and between 21°C and 27°C in the rest of the country.

By Thursday, instability is expected to worsen as the low-pressure system interacts with cold upper-level air masses over the Iberian Peninsula and northern Morocco.

As a result, strong thunderstorms accompanied by hail are expected in the southeast, the High and Middle Atlas, eastern Morocco, and eastern Rif. Scattered rainfall is also anticipated in the Rif, Mediterranean coast, Saiss region, and north of Rabat, alongside continuing strong wind gusts and dusty conditions in the Atlas, southeast, and eastern regions.

Overnight temperatures Thursday will drop to between 8°C and 12°C in the Atlas and Rif, and range between 15°C and 21°C in the far southeast and eastern Saharan provinces. A slight temperature dip is forecast in the southeast, while other regions may see a mild rise.

On Friday, thunderstorms will likely persist in the Atlas Mountains, eastern Morocco, and eastern Rif. Skies will remain partly cloudy with a chance of scattered showers in the Saiss region and Mediterranean coast.

The southeast and eastern Saharan provinces are expected to remain relatively hot, with ongoing strong winds and sandstorms in the eastern region and High Atlas. Temperatures will rise in the southeast and southern parts of the east, while dropping elsewhere.

Weather conditions are expected to gradually improve from Saturday, with a return to relatively stable conditions. However, isolated showers may continue in the Atlas, Rif, and northwest.

The meteorological office urged the public to exercise caution, especially in mountainous areas prone to heavy thunderstorms, and to avoid crossing rivers or streams during hazardous weather.
