About 88% of flight delays recorded at major Moroccan airports in March were due to issues at departure airports, not airline operations, Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh said on Tuesday.
Addressing the House of Councilors, Kayouh cited technical factors and emergency situations beyond airline control as the primary causes of delays at airports in Casablanca, Marrakech, Tangier, Agadir, Rabat, Fez, Oujda, and Nador. He pointed to a recent power outage in Spain and Portugal that led to the cancellation of over 40 flights as an example.
The minister said his department is addressing the delays through infrastructure upgrades, including a new runway project, and the simplification of airport procedures to improve passenger flow, especially for connecting flights.
Kayouh added that under the “Airports Vision 2030” program, Morocco aims to double airport capacity to 80 million passengers annually, in part to prepare for co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
While acknowledging that delays are inherent to the air transport sector, he said the ministry is taking targeted measures to minimize disruptions when exceptional circumstances arise.
