The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has commended Morocco’s growing role in vaccine production and biomanufacturing, highlighting the country’s leadership in strengthening Africa’s health security.

In a feature published on its website, Africa CDC spotlighted a Moroccan consortium led by the Pasteur Institute of Morocco (IPM), which includes the Mohammed VI University of Health Sciences, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, the African Academy of Health Sciences, biotechnology firm Marbio, and the Moroccan Agency for Medicines and Health Products.

This consortium was designated co-host of the Africa CDC Regional Capacity and Competence Network (RCCN) for North Africa during the second African Union Forum on Vaccine and Other Health Product Manufacturing in February. Its role includes advancing vaccine innovation, training health professionals, and scaling up sustainable biomanufacturing capacity.

“The most remarkable moment was Morocco’s selection as RCCN North Africa co-host,” said Professor Abderrahmane Maaroufi, Director of IPM. “This recognition crowns years of institutional effort to make Morocco a hub for vaccine development in Africa.”

The consortium is working closely with Africa CDC and other RCCNs to align training programs with regional needs, foster regulatory harmonization, and build strategic partnerships aimed at boosting local manufacturing capabilities and reducing Africa’s reliance on imported vaccines.

“Morocco has decades of expertise in biomanufacturing,” said Chiluba Mwila, Senior Technical Advisor at Africa CDC. “Its leadership through IPM offers an opportunity for other African states to benefit from its infrastructure and experience.”
