The 39th edition of the Marathon des Sables (MDS), one of the world’s toughest endurance races, will run from April 4 to 14 in the Moroccan Sahara under the High Patronage of HM King Mohammed VI.
The ultramarathon spans 250 km across six stages, making it one of the longest timed distances in MDS history, the organizers said in a press release. Nearly 1,000 athletes from 52 countries are set to compete in the self-sufficient desert race, where participants must carry their own food and gear.
“This edition promises to be both grueling and thrilling,” according to the organizers. Moroccan brothers Rachid and Mohamed El Morabity, multiple-time winners, are among the frontrunners, while the Yachou brothers pose a formidable challenge. On the women’s side, defending champion Aziza El Amrany will face former winners Maryline Nakach and Ragna Debats.
Last year’s edition, held from April 12 to 22, saw Rachid El Morabity and Aziza El Amrany claim victory.
The MDS is open to runners and walkers alike, with participants braving scorching temperatures and rugged terrain in a test of endurance and resilience.
