Health professionals in Morocco have welcomed the return of regular methadone distribution, following previous supply disruptions, as a significant step in managing severe addiction across treatment centers in the country.

Medical experts emphasize that methadone plays a vital role in addiction treatment, helping individuals break free from dependency while mitigating health, psychological, and social risks.

Physician and health researcher Tayeb Hamdi highlighted methadone’s importance as a harm-reduction tool rather than a cure, pointing out that Morocco was one of the first countries in the region to adopt this approach.

He explained that methadone substitutes heroin, curbing cravings and reducing withdrawal-related aggression, such as theft or violent behavior. Additionally, it aids in restoring social and family relationships while lowering the risk of relapse and diseases like HIV and hepatitis.

Despite not being a definitive solution for addiction, Hamdi stressed that methadone provides a safer alternative to illicit drugs and is crucial for long-term recovery efforts.

Mohamed Aariwa, another health expert, praised the reintroduction of methadone supplies, stating that its controlled distribution ensures safer use under medical supervision. He noted that doctors tailor treatments based on global health guidelines, enhancing the effectiveness of addiction management.

Aariwa emphasized Morocco’s extensive experience in addiction treatment and underscored methadone’s effectiveness in stabilizing patients and reintegrating them into society. He acknowledged past shortages but noted that authorities had resolved these issues by securing adequate supplies, ensuring continued access for those in need.

With methadone now a cornerstone of Morocco’s national addiction treatment strategy, experts believe its regular availability will strengthen the country’s healthcare system and improve the lives of individuals battling substance dependency.
