OCP Group, the world’s leading phosphate producer, recorded a sharp increase in investment and revenue in 2024, driven by higher fertilizer exports and advancements in sustainability initiatives.
The company’s total investment volume rose from 26.8 billion dirhams ($2.7 billion) in 2023 to 43.6 billion dirhams ($4.4 billion) last year, reflecting an acceleration of its strategic expansion. Revenue climbed to approximately 97 billion dirhams ($9.7 billion), up from 91.2 billion dirhams ($9.1 billion) in the previous year.
OCP also reported a substantial rise in gross profit, which increased from 50.5 billion dirhams ($5 billion) to 62.6 billion dirhams ($6.3 billion) over two years. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) reached 39 billion dirhams ($3.9 billion), a significant jump from 29.3 billion dirhams ($2.9 billion) in 2023.
“OCP has demonstrated its ability to adapt to changing market conditions while strengthening operational efficiency,” said Chairman and CEO Mustapha Terrab. “We have made remarkable progress in sustainability, particularly in water management and solar energy.”
The company desalinated 63 million cubic meters of water to support its production facilities and advanced its solar energy program to reduce carbon emissions.
Fertilizer Exports Drive Growth
Fertilizers accounted for 69% of OCP’s total revenue in 2024, up from 66% the previous year, as exports surged in key markets such as Brazil and India. Sales of triple superphosphate (TSP) fertilizer rose 48%, reflecting strong global demand. However, phosphate rock sales fell 35% due to weaker demand in India.
OCP’s fourth-quarter revenue declined to 27.9 billion dirhams ($2.8 billion) from 30.2 billion dirhams ($3 billion) a year earlier, partly due to exceptional purchasing activity in late 2024. Despite this, the company maintained a stable gross profit margin of 18.1 billion dirhams ($1.8 billion) and an EBITDA margin of 43%, highlighting the resilience of its operating model.
Strategic Investments and Sustainability Push
OCP raised $300 million in February through an additional bond issuance and secured 5 billion dirhams ($500 million) in local bond funding in December to support its investment plans. The company expanded production capacity by commissioning two new sulfuric acid production lines at its Jorf Lasfar complex and launching a new fertilizer production unit.
The company also made progress in its long-term infrastructure projects. It continued development of the Mzinda-Safi corridor, aimed at increasing production capacity by 2028. In the energy sector, the first phase of OCP’s solar power project neared completion, with the first green kilowatt generated at the Benguerir mine in September.
Meanwhile, the company began operating a new seawater desalination facility at Jorf Lasfar, producing 60 million cubic meters of water annually. The initiative is part of OCP’s broader effort to secure water supplies and reduce pressure on natural resources.
Resilience Amid Market Shifts
OCP attributed its strong financial performance to a strategic approach that allowed it to navigate global market fluctuations while maintaining competitiveness. The company’s expansion in fertilizers, particularly TSP, helped offset economic challenges affecting some key markets.
“OCP’s ability to attract new demand and expand its global reach reinforces our role in supporting global agriculture and sustainability,” the company said in a statement.
As part of its long-term strategy, OCP continues to focus on renewable energy, water management and expanding production capacity. The company remains a key player in the global phosphate and agricultural inputs industry, positioning itself for further growth amid evolving market conditions.
