New data from Ookla, the global leader in internet speed testing, has placed Morocco at the forefront of North Africa in terms of average upload speeds and fiber internet infrastructure.
The data, reviewed by Hespress, shows that Morocco outpaced Egypt, recording an impressive upload speed of 31.86 Mbps in Q4 of 2024, almost matching the country’s download speed of 35.57 Mbps.
In contrast, Egypt led in download speeds, which peaked at 80 Mbps in Q2 of 2024, benefiting from an expanded VDSL network. However, Morocco achieved a 32% improvement in download speed during the same period, reaching 35.57 Mbps, largely due to the growing adoption of Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) services.
Ookla’s report also highlighted the rapid growth of Morocco’s broadband market, with connections increasing from over 1.6 million in 2019 to more than 2.5 million by September 2024. The government’s ambitious Digital Morocco 2030 strategy, backed by a budget of 11 billion dirhams, aims to provide fiber internet to 5.6 million households by the World Cup year, positioning Morocco to become one of Africa’s largest fiber markets.
However, Ookla emphasized the need for a review of the fiber rollout strategy to allow Maroc Telecom to offer more competitive fiber packages, which could further stimulate market competition and accelerate Morocco’s digital transformation ahead of the 2030 target.
