The captain of the Argentine national football team, Lionel Messi, has missed the call for the next two South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup against Uruguay and Brazil, due to injury.
Messi is absent from the list of players selected by Lionel Scaloni and released on Monday by the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
The 2022 world champions, who top the South American group standings with 25 points, will face Uruguay on March 21, an opportunity for revenge following their 0-2 defeat in Buenos Aires in November 2023, before facing their arch-rivals Brazil, four days later.
Argentina could potentially ensure qualification for the 2026 World Cup by winning the next two games.
Argentina’s squad is missing more than just Messi for the two crucial qualifiers, with Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Montiel and Giovani Lo Celso also being ruled out.
